Technical Review: Thompson’s Clear Sealer on New Cedar

At Elegant Painting®, we are often asked about the immediate preservation of new wood. Applying a Thompson’s WaterSeal® Clear Sealer to a new cedar fence board provides an instant moisture barrier, helping to prevent the "water-logging" that leads to premature warping and fungal growth.
As shown in our technical samples, the clear sealer allows the natural, raw aesthetic of the cedar to remain the focal point while adding a protective paraffin-wax layer to the surface fibers.

While clear sealers are excellent for immediate waterproofing, they provide very little protection against UV-induced graying. In the Pacific Northwest, where we experience intense sun-to-rain cycles, clear sealers typically require annual reapplication. If you desire a "natural" look with longer durability, we often recommend a semi-transparent paraffin oil stain which offers deeper fiber penetration.

Managing Cedar Fences in Cottage Lake & Woodinville
In high-moisture neighborhoods like Cottage Lake and Sammamish, a new cedar fence is a significant investment. Utilizing a clear sealer immediately after installation (or once the wood has reached the proper moisture content) is critical for wood preservation. In 2026, exterior paint trends for fences are shifting toward these "invisible" protective layers that highlight the wood's organic character while preventing the black mold growth common to untreated Eastside cedar.
