Haint blue, a soft shade ranging from pale turquoise to sky blue, has deep roots in Southern tradition. Traditionally used on porches and ceilings to create a sense of calm, Elegant Painting® is now bringing this enchanting color to the Pacific Northwest.

By incorporating haint blue into our local projects, we enhance the aesthetic of Washington homes while fostering a connection to historical Southern heritage. This blend of tradition and modern design allows Northwest residents to experience a unique sense of tranquility and whimsy.

Why is it called "Haint Blue"?

Haint blue isn’t exactly the same as the generic blue you usually see on porch ceilings. This unique color—reminiscent of the "evil eye" blue found on Greek talismans—was traditionally believed to keep evil spirits (or "haints") at bay.

Interestingly, this shade appears across the globe, from Portuguese coastal houses to the Southern U.S., linked by a history that suggests a deep, cross-cultural protective symbolism.

"I grew up in South Carolina in the late 60s and early 70s, and haint blue was everywhere on doors and shutters. You definitely won’t find it on porch ceilings, though; those are usually a lighter sky blue to trick wasps into thinking they’re looking at the sky."

Expert Commentary: Haint Blue in PNW Light
Under the often overcast skies of Redmond and Woodinville, haint blue can shift dramatically. While it provides a bright pop of color on a "gray day," the cooler PNW light can make some sky blues feel icy. We recommend testing SW 6505 Atmospheric against your home's undertones to ensure it retains its whimsical, Southern warmth.
