Power Wash & Neutralize

Pressure washing a deck

Close wash of all deck surfaces being treated.

We begin by performing a test-run. Only if our power washer is unable to remove all previous finishes do we apply 2n1 BEHR Finish Remover to loosen the previous stain before power washing. Once washing is complete, all surfaces near the deck are rinsed with low, garden hose pressure to remove any loosened cedar pores from the deck boards.

Neutralize: After the wash, all surfaces are sprayed with one coat of Sherwin Williams SuperDeck® Revive Deck and Siding Brightener. This material is rinsed off within a few minutes, restoring the pH of the wood and neutralizing any stripping material used.

Note on Water Entry: We assume your doors and windows are properly sealed and your home is safe to wash without water entering. After this portion is complete, please check all windows. Elegant Painting® cannot be held responsible for poorly sealed structures that leak (very rare).

Masking & Cover-Up

Deck masking and cover-up

We protect all surfaces that are not being stained. This document is your written guarantee that our workers will not drip any stain on any surfaces outside the project scope.

  • Walkways: Covered with tarps or drop cloths to prevent drips and overspray.
  • Plants: Covered with painter’s plastic, tarps, or drop cloths. We may prune plants touching the deck and will “tie back” branches to prevent contact with freshly stained surfaces.
  • Outdoor Patio & BBQ: Moved a safe distance from the work area, or covered and protected in place.

Surface Preparation Service

Deck surface preparation and sanding

► Fiber Disk Sanding

Using fiber disk sanders, we remove up to 1/16″ from the surface of deck boards, bench-tops, and handrail. This process restores most deck boards to 80–90% like-new condition. Spindles, bench legs, hot tubs, or any other surface too delicate for disk sanders are carefully hand-sanded.

► Dust Removal

Using powerful gas blowers, we remove all sanding dust from between boards, gaps, and cracks, as well as all nearby surfaces, before stain application begins.

Stain Application

TWP Semi-Transparent Deck Stain

TWP Semi-Transparent Stain

Your price includes all needed materials. We apply TWP 101 Natural Cedar Tone via airless spray + back-brush, wet-on-wet per manufacturer’s instructions — one coat is applied, we wait roughly 60 seconds, then apply the second pass and pick up the excess with a stain brush. Applied to deck boards, railings, and benches.

Semi-transparent: 1 application session (wet-on-wet) per manufacturer recommendation.

TWP Manufacturer Specs
Sherwin Williams SuperDeck Solid Stain

SuperDeck® Solid Color Stain

We apply Sherwin Williams® SuperDeck® Exterior Waterborne Solid Color Deck Stain via airless spray + back-brush, wet-on-dry per manufacturer’s instructions. Two full coats applied to deck boards, railings, and benches with adequate dry time between coats.

Solid stain: 2 coats per manufacturer recommendation (full dry between coats).

SuperDeck Manufacturer Specs
Why No Primer? No primer should be used before applying semi-transparent or self-priming Sherwin Williams® solid stains. Primer prevents the stain from penetrating and bonding with the grain of the wood — which is exactly what stain is formulated to do.
